RESCUE, WHERE, HOW?
We are stationed in the water at Los Lances Norte and Valdevaqueros beach every day when there is Levante wind (offshore). The rescue zone where we could spot visually people in difficulty is up to one kilometer (1 km) from Chiringuito Agua.
Bring a mobile phone with you on water if you are sailing outside of the rescue zone.
Have someone on the beach call us if you are out of sight and you need assistance. Let them know where you are going and how long you plan to stay on water.
DRIFTING HELPLESS OUT AT SEA IS NOT FUN!
Tarifa has strong currents often exceeding 10 - 11 kph.
Water temperature can drop sharply during Levante as the cool deep water is drawn to the surface.
The tidal waters can be unpredictable making it hard to find your lost surfing equipment.
Providing safety at sea in Tarifa is a tricky job. Local condition can vary dramatically depending on the wind direction and strength, currents and tide. The boats we needed to select had to be large enough to handle bigger seas and small enough to be able to manoeuvre near the shore around water-sport activities.
